Formation of public-private partnerships has become an instrumental concept and approach for mobilizing (voluntary) technical, financial and human resource services for revitalization of public sector education.
SEF has pioneered in effectively engaging the private sector and the communities in government school revival through the Adopt-A-School Program (AASP). The program has made significant progress in quantitative terms; starting out in 1998, the total figure of adopted schools currently stands at 165, depicting increasing interest and inclination of the private sector to support government schools. The results have been remarkable also in terms of infrastructural improvements and support and improvement of the teaching-learning process within the schools. The inclusion of the School Management Committees (SMCs) has been a non-negotiable factor of this program and significant results have been achieved in involving the parents in the process of school development. There is a special purpose behind using the concept of adoption for these schools. Adoption requires ‘nurturing’ of the school, not just by meeting its infrastructural needs, but also going beyond by initiating a sustainable process of qualitative change.
