Health Education has always been a crucial component at the Child Labor Education Program’s (CLEP) Child Development Center. With the implementation of different health programs at the CDC, the center now serves as an essential component of health education and facilities for its students and community members. The following health activities were organized at the Child Development Center: - An informative session on ‘Fundamentals of Health’ was arranged at Child Development Center (CDC), Shershah on December 19, 2006 by Ms. Sirajunnisa Isani. Tailored for the female community members and teachers of the schools in the Shershah area, the health session educated the participants on basic health issues. Owing to the strong attendance at the session and the feedback of the participants the Sindh Education Foundation intends to make these sessions a regular feature so that more members of the community can benefit from learning about crucial, relevant and applicable health principles. - Free of cost dental checkups were provided to approximately 250 students of CDC at Shershah by a leading dental institute of Karachi- Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine. The beneficiaries mainly comprised of groups of children who work in various industries at Shershah and also manage to take out time to study at the Child Development Center. - During the National Polio week, a polio camp was set up at the CDC, Shershah by the Rural Health Centre. The Rural Health Centre is a government established center providing basic health services such as medicine, vaccinations and other required material free of cost. The vaccination camp at the CDC provided oral polio vaccination to more than 200 children all between the ages of 3-5 years in the Shershah area. Door-to-door visits were conducted by the Community Support Officers and the doctors of the Rural Health Centre to administer the polio vaccine on children who could not come to the center.
The children and team members of CDC celebrated Eid Milan party. Ms. Sirajunnisa Isani and officials from ICI Pakistan were invited to attend the event. The show included children’s performances and poetry recitals. It also included speeches from the guests and children. ICI Pakistan appreciated the team and children of CDC for their performance and gifted children with educational games and stationery.
ICI has contributed towards the infrastructural improvement of the Child Development Center at Shershah. Painting the walls with a fresh, bright color, the organization has breathed new life into the building of CDC, making the children more enthusiastic about going to where they study.
A workshop on ‘Creating an Inclusive Learning-Friendly Environment (ILFE)’ was organized by the Child Labor Education Program (CLEP). The 5-day workshop was held at the Child Development Center (CDC) from January 3 to 7, 2006. Its ‘inclusive learning’ component sought to train teachers to entrust parents with a more significant responsibility in the learning and development of their children; the segment on ‘friendly environment’ attempted to highlight the need for community participation in establishing an enabling learning environment for all children. This innovatively executed workshop, which used an ILFE toolkit developed by UNESCO, also aimed at providing more activity-centered learning opportunities for children by educating the CDC teachers alternative instructional styles to meet each child’s needs.
