Addressing Gender Disparity in Primary and Secondary Education, UNESCO Supported Project.
Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) in collaboration with UNESCO organized a two day workshop on “Addressing Gender Disparity in Primary & Secondary Education” on the 18th & 19th of February 2004 at Sheraton Hotel, Karachi. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha, Education Secretary, Government of Sindh. Professor Anita Ghulam Ali and Mr. Hassan A. Keynan represented SEF and UNESCO respectively in the workshop on 18th February, 2004. The workshop was attended by the Executive District Officers (EDOs) from various Districts of Sindh as well as the representatives from different NGOs working in the field of education.
The workshop aimed to achieve the following objectives:
- Develop an understanding of gender and development.
- Contextualize gender and development for educational development.
- Discuss how to address issues faced towards educating girls.
- Formulate strategies for incorporating gender issues into the design, planning, implementation and monitoring of development projects.
The workshop was formally concluded on 19th February, 2004 with the distribution of certificates to the Executive District Officers and all the participants. Mr. Mashhood Rizvi, Director, SEF thanked the representatives from the Education Department, Government of Sindh and all the participants for expressing their views and suggestions. He said that the workshop was very interactive and helpful in developing an understanding of the gender concepts and how it reflects the process of educational development. He hoped that positive efforts will be made to revitalize the situation and eliminate gender disparity in education.
