The Women’s Literacy & Empowerment Program (WLEP) is an adult education initiative of SEF which operates through 40 Centers across three districts of Sindh province. Recent interventions have been made across the centers in areas of adult women learning and literacy, early childhood care and development, health care and education and community awareness programs. These interventions directly targeted more than 1300 women learners and 600 children and were supported by Johnson & Johnson Pakistan. Multiple learning resources were provided to adult learners and 85 Learning Facilitators and co-facilitators were provided trainings in areas of effective management of adult literacy centers, community mobilization techniques, andragogical methodologies and skills for imparting health awareness, social awareness and life skills education. A set of adult literacy stories, highlighting health issues and tips on social and entrepreneurial skills, was also provided to the learners. Health camps organized for 1900 program beneficiaries comprised check-ups by trained doctors, nurses and other related personnel as well as free medicines for women learners and their children. Early childhood development interventions included awareness sessions for women learners on concepts of ECD, design of classroom level activities for learners’ children of ages between 4-5 years and provision of age-appropriate learning resources for enriching the learning environment. A theme based post-literacy resource was also developed for adult women learners and educators on issues of empowerment including self awareness, education, health, human rights, etc. An end of term assessment was carried out and around 900 learners successfully completed SEF’s adult education course recently.
