According to estimates 40% of SEF partner schools have either been made dysfunctional or damaged due to the 2010 floods. Since schools play a critical role during and after disasters in various contexts and can act as havens for whole communities, SEF‘s work with the affected communities is enhanced even more. Presently, SEF is conducting field surveys to analyze the extent of damage that has occurred so that school revival may be facilitated.
For this purpose SEF has initiated a School Profiling Survey in October 2010 across partner schools in Sindh. The survey aims at assessing the impact of recent floods on schools and the status of schools infrastructure, student enrollment/head count, teacher attendance and SMCs, material inventory provided by SEF, and highlighting issues as academic concerns. So far data collection in 300 PPRS Project schools and 150 ELP schools has been completed; while the survey is underway in schools operating under RBCS program. In the coming months, the survey will be conducted in the existing 300 IELP schools; and a re-verification exercise will be undertaken across the 1150 newly announced sites in order to gauge the post-flood impact.
The data collected so far is being analyzed to assess the extent of damage to schools caused by floods. Analysis will facilitate SEF is devising strategies to address post floods program needs at the grass roots including the infrastructural and learning requirements. |
