With an increase in epidemics such as malaria and dengue fever, the WLEP team conducted various awareness-raising sessions on health in the Malir & Sehwan Centers. The topics discussed during these sessions included ailments such as dengue fever, drugs, malaria, hepatitis, pneumonia, cold & cough and various other common ailments. These sessions were conducted for the teachers of the Women’s Literacy & Empowerment Centre (WLEC) to further educate the learners at their centers. With the help of the discussion teachers will be able to impart essential knowledge to the WLEC learners regarding vaccinations, treatments and overall cleanliness of their surroundings.
A community workshop on gender equity and conflict resolution was organized at Khaskheli Para - Rehri Goth in Malir District. 28 community members (males and females) attended the workshop during which many important issues were addressed. At the workshop the male participants agreed to the fact that women are suppressed to a degree where they fear to voice their misery in the face of inequity and discrimination. The workshop served as an educational and interactive endeavour where participants were educated on the concept of conflict resolution through various interesting group activities. Participants were also apprised of the various techniques of resolving conflicts and were informed on how to practically implement it in their lives.
Stories play an integral role in instigating a change in mindsets and actions of individuals. It also facilitates the reader to reflect on and resolve issues at the community level. Prof. Rehana Mughni, Manager of the Women’s Literacy Empowerment Program at the Sindh Education Foundation has written 9 short anthropological stories catering for educating women who have passed the early literacy phase. These stories are centered on three broad themes which include health and nutrition, income generation and conflict resolution.
These beautifully illustrated stories with colors and characters are an innovative attempt to inculcate women to think critically and be effective problem solvers within their homes and their communities. A teacher’s guide has also been developed to assist the teachers in lesson delivery. This has been a one of its kind attempt in Pakistan catered specifically for women through employing their lives as a channel for learning
5 day training was organized for 34 Learning Facilitators of the SEF’s Women’s Literacy & Empowerment Program. The training titled ‘Teachers as Critical Thinkers’ was held from August 28 till September 1, 2006.
